The nine children accompanied by teachers and chaperones arrived in Miami. With translation dictionaries in hand students gleefully met there prospective hosts eager to learn about each other. The Mexican students are here from Colegio Montessori Chiaravalle, a school in Leon, Mexico a metropolitan city with a population area including the surrounding suburbs of over 1.6 million, making it the 7th largest metropolis in Mexico. Leon a city founded in 1576 is known for its exportation of leather goods, in fact 60% percent of all the shoes produced in Mexico are from there. Leon is also known for being one of the most environmentally friendly cities with a high number of cyclists cruising through their integrated transportation network.
During their visit the students take part in several field trips to get to know their host area. They are also immersed in daily school life practicing their English while giving the local students the opportunity to practice their Spanish. A big part of the Montessori curriculum focuses on studying different countries and cultures with the aspect of traveling to foreign countries as part of an exchange student program. Students are encouraged to gain the ability to think and act as global citizens.
