April 19, 2012 - PRLog -- DALLAS – April 19, 2012 – A north Texas joint venture (JV) formed by McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., a Texas builder for 30 years, and  protégé, GCC Enterprises, Inc., broke ground on a new  Army Reserve Center (ARC) on Friday, April 13 in participation with Congressman Michael Burgess and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The nearly $12-million military construction project in Denton, Texas will provide robust headquarters, training and maintenance facilities for the Army Reserve. The construction is being administered by USACE, Fort Worth District. When completed in March of 2013, the ARC will be used to train and develop military skills for local reservists who serve global military missions.

The ARC includes a 37,000-square-foot administrative/training center, an organizational maintenance shop, storage buildings and support facilities. The support facilities include two covered wash platforms, a  high/low loading ramp, paving, fencing, general site improvements and site utilities.

The ARC project is the first win for the recently formed mentor-protégé JV team, organized under  the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 8(a) Business Development Program. McCarthy’s two-year mentor-protégé relationship with GCC Enterprises and the firms’ shared project experience led logically to a JV partnership to pursue federal and other projects. The firms have also worked together at  Fort Hood, in Dallas, and they are preparing to start another project for the Army in Texarkana.

“This first win with GCC sets a great precedent for our mentor-protégé joint venture and it shows our competitiveness for these types of opportunities in the federal market,” said McCarthy Texas Division President Mike McWay. “Both companies have invested a lot in this relationship, and it is terrific to see the results of that effort in the form of important construction being done side-by-side right here in Dallas for the nation’s men and women in uniform.”

Greg Cody, GCC’s President, added, “As a veteran who’s been a construction contractor since leaving military service, I am very proud of what we are doing. This GCC McCarthy partnership has helped strengthen my company in many ways, and we’re proud of what we bring individually and as a team to the challenge. We see a lot of opportunity and promise in these efforts.”

In addition to the ARC Denton project, McCarthy is currently underway with five federal projects in Texas, including the $538-million Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center Replacement for USACE - the largest project to date funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. McCarthy is leading that JV with Balfour Beatty, in association with HKS Architects and Wingler & Sharp as design partners. That 947,000-square-foot facility will replace the 45-year-old existing Army Medical Center and provide new, state-of-the-art healthcare facilities for service members and their families at Fort Hood, near Killeen, Texas.
