Farmer Jaffe Weissing Advocates National Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Fort Lauderdale, FL – Farmer, Jaffe, Weissing, Edwards, Fistos & Lehrman, PL proudly advocates Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) - April 2012, sponsored by the the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC).

The goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence. This year’s campaign topic (talking to your children, the importance of consent, gender norms and sexuality later in life) focuses on healthy sexuality which encourages communities and individuals to join the conversation on how we connect and respect one another in order to prevent sexual violence.

According to the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (http://www.nctsnet.org) sexual violence—including child sexual abuse—crosses all ages, genders, races, ethnicities, and economic backgrounds. According to the Child Maltreatment 2009 report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Children's Bureau,  65,964 cases of child sexual abuse were reported in the United States in 2009—9.5 percent of the total number of reported maltreatment cases that year.

In regards to talking with your children NSVRC provides the following tips for parents and caregivers:

* Know the warnings signs of child sexual abuse. There are differences between the behaviors that are cause for concern and behaviors that are common and healthy. Visit http://www.stopitnow.org to learn more.
* Talk to your children. Talking to your children about sexuality builds trust and lets children know that they can come to you for help. Talking discourages secrets and establishes that no topic or question is off-limits. Talking to your children about sexuality also provides them with information that may help protect them from abuse. Help children understand boundaries, indentify abuse and tell someone they trust. * Pay attention to what your children see, hear and say. Children are influenced by the world feel overwhelming. Music, TV, Internet and peers all provide children with messages about sexuality. Be aware of what they are hearing and look for received information on sexuality or sex teachable moments.
* Communicate your values. Family is often the primary source for helping to develop an individual’s sense of values around sexuality.
