March 22, 2012 - PRLog -- Two local causes - Diverse Abilities Plus, the only Dorset disability charity that supports children and adults and their families throughout their life, and Poole Hospital Charity, supporting all the wards and departments at Poole Hospital funding equipment and care above and beyond that provided by the NHS – are urging local people to experience the excitement of Chinese Dragon Boat Racing on Poole Park’s lake on Sunday 15 July, between 10am and 4pm.

Organisers are advising that enthusiasm is essential for this event, but experience is not required as full coaching will be given. The event is ideal for company employees to use as a team building exercise, or for friends and family seeking a fun day out. Spectators can also enjoy the excitement by cheering on the teams taking part.

The charities are looking for 30 teams in total to compete against each other in three heats, which will finish with semi-finals and a final. A short award ceremony will follow for the winners. Teams are made up of 17, which includes 16 paddlers and one drummer. If you can’t quite get 17 in a team, the minimum number is nine.

Sharon Wells, Events Officer at Diverse Abilities Plus, and Pamela Bell from Poole Hospital Charity, both said: “The Chinese have enjoyed this competitive and colourful event for over 2,000 years and it’s great that we can experience the same fun here in Poole. Whether you are a complete novice, adrenaline addict or keen boat racer, you can look forward to a thrilling ride. By taking part in the dragon boat race, you will be helping two amazing charities raise much needed funds to continue the work they do.”

The charities decided to join forces for this event as Dr Anthony Cronin, who is part of the medical paediatric team in the Child Development Centre at Poole Hospital, also provides medical cover for Langside School, one of Diverse Abilities Plus’ services.

Dr Cronin said: “It has been a pleasure to be part of the wider team at Langside School providing integrated education and health care to the delightful children with special needs that attend the school.  The staff, pupils and families that work at and attend Langside are a joy to work with.  The integrated childrens’ community and hospital paediatric service and other agencies work together to provide a seamless service at Langside School.”

The team entry fee is £170, approximately £10 per person, per team, and a minimum of £750, approximately £45 per person, is required as sponsorship per team. Anyone over the age of 12 can be part of a team, as long as they are confident in deep water while wearing a buoyancy aid. All participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
