Birth Control Pills Recalled Due to Factory Mishap

March 20, 2012 - PRLog -- For the second time in a month, birth control pills have been recalled, casting doubt on the reliability of drug companies to provide quality control in contraceptive manufacturing.

According to the company’s Feb. 24 press release on the FDA, Glenmark Generics issued a voluntary, nationwide recall of seven lots of its birth control pill that were manufactured in India. The recall was made because of a packaging error in which the product’s four rows of pills were reversed, putting the bottom row of placebo pills on the top.  

The company said that as a result, the daily dose of the oral contraceptives “may be incorrect” and that it “could leave women without adequate contraception, and at risk for unintended pregnancy.” The Glenmark press release did not include an apology for the mistake.

Pfizer Recall

In January, Pfizer recalled nearly one million generic birth control pills labeled Norgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol tablets, when the company found that some packs contained an “inexact count of inert or active ingredient tablets, and tablets out of sequence.”

Birth control pills are normally packaged in blister packs containing 21 tablets of active ingredients and seven placebo tablets. The pills’ effectiveness may be significantly weakened if the sequence of birth control pills is out of order, according to Dr. Adam Jacobs, assistant professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, who was interviewed by ABC News recently following the Pfizer pill recall.
