The organization was founded by a speech and language scientist after discovering through a 6-month study the lack of speech and language therapy services present in Ghana. In 2004, the Speech and Hearing Centre became the first organization in the country that systematically targets and supports the steadily growing group of children and young people in need of these services in a planned and consistent way. Through interdisciplinary assessments, individual and group therapy, home and school visits, and the availability of resources, seminars, and workshops for parents, the organization aims to be a one-stop center for the children and their families.
Currently, they provide language groups for children and young people with delayed or disordered speech and language, supports multidisciplinary assessments for children, outreaches to schools and autism groups, engages in local and national awareness promotions, and organizes seminars, workshops and support for people with communication disabilities, parents, and health and education practitioners.
The goal of the volunteer placement is to assist with the running of the speech and language therapy groups, be part of school outreach activities, and to help pool resources to promote the organization’
