Smith Crossing and Smith Village hold free support groups in March

2 CCRCs to advise caregivers coping with family members who have Alzheimer’s and dementia

Feb. 17, 2012 - PRLog -- Southwestern Chicago and suburban families and caregivers of seniors living with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia can find out how to cope with a loved one or friend who exhibits uncharacteristic behavior.

At 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 1, the admissions director, social service director and resident services director of Smith Crossing at 10501 Emilie Lane in Orland Park will present a program on how to deal with challenging behaviors. They will discuss such behaviors as sleep disturbances, physical or verbal outbursts, emotional distress, restlessness, pacing, yelling, delusions and hallucinations.

The next Tuesday, March 6, Smith Village at 2320 W. 113th Place in Chicago’s Beverly neighborhood will have a program at 6:30 p.m. centering on a daughter’s insight into Alzheimer’s disease. Moderated by memory support coordinator Diane Morgan, the session will begin with a
movie, “Complaints of a Dutiful Daughter.”

The free hour-long gatherings at both continuing care retirement communities are open to the public and families of Smith residents. A discussion, Q&A period and light refreshments will conclude
each meeting.
