Spring Break Average Skier Reviews Ski Resorts

Many families only ski once a year, on spring break. They ski to spend time together as a family, and actually prefer greens and easy blues to black diamonds. How would an average skier and working mother rate the ski resorts in the western US?

Jan. 30, 2012 - PRLog -- WhereWeVacation.com is a new travel blog that profiles ski resorts in the western US.  A working mother who went skiing with her family every spring break ranks ski resorts by steepness (less steep preferred), crowds (no crowds preferred), and food quality.  As it turns out, some of the least crowded resorts are in the Pacific Northwest area, which so far has had the most snow in a fairly dry season.  Mt. Bachelor in Oregon, Schweitzer Mountain Resort in Idaho, and Whitefish Mountain Resort in Montana are profiled with pictures, slide shows, reviews of other non-ski activities, and some restaurant reviews.

In total, 18 ski resorts are profiled, covering not only the Pacific Northwest, but the Lake Tahoe area, Utah, and Colorado.  The writer of WhereWeVacation.com noticed that she did not ski as well in Colorado as at other resorts, and it turned out this was because of the altitude and her hypothyroid condition.  Apparently, if one is hypothyroid and/or undermedicated, it can cause slower breathing, and combined with lower oxygen levels at higher altitudes, can result in high altitude sickness.  There is a more in-depth discussion on the correlation of low thyroid with high altitude sickness at http://tiredthyroid.com/high-altitude-sickness.html.

Because so many are hypothyroid and don’t even know it, or suffer from some degree of high altitude sickness, a table was created that ranks ski resorts in the western US by elevation.  Found at http://www.wherewevacation.com/ski-resorts-by-elevation/ it not only shows peak and base elevations of the major ski resorts in the western US, but also the elevation of nearby lodging cities, and the distance and drive time from nearby airports.  In the United States, the highest major ski resorts are found in Colorado, where Arapahoe Basin has a peak elevation of over 13,000 feet, and a base elevation over 10,000 feet.  The lowest major western ski resorts can be found in the Pacific Northwest states of Washington, Idaho, and Montana.  Stevens pass in Washington has a peak elevation of 5,800 feet, and a base just over 4,000 feet, well below the 8,000 foot threshold where many with high altitude sickness become symptomatic.

Tips on Choosing a Ski Resort http://www.wherewevacation.com/choosing-a-ski-resort/ is another section that families may find helpful in planning their upcoming spring break ski trip.  Some items to consider in addition to the ski resort’s elevation are the cost of children’s lift tickets (some ski resorts offer discounts below a certain age), the steepness of the mountain, the distance from a major airport (or ease of getting there), the types of lodging available (ski-in/out or not), whether you prefer the big city atmosphere (Salt Lake City) or prefer to get away from civilization (Grand Targhee), and the quantity of ski resorts in a single area (places like Salt Lake City have 10 major ski resorts to choose from).

While WhereWeVacation.com has extensive information on ski resorts, other vacation spots like the Hawaiian Islands are also reviewed with pictures, slide shows, restaurant reviews, and reviews of other island activities.
