Need to vet your subcontractors? CQMS explains what you need to know

When you employ a subcontractor to carry out work on your behalf at either your premises or those of your client, you have a duty under the health and safety legislation to ensure they are competent for the task you have employed them to do.

Jan. 18, 2012 - PRLog -- Wayne Eaton from CQMS, a leading health and safety consultancy in the UK comments:

“When you employ a subcontractor, you are obliged to check their competence to ensure they comply with current health and safety legislation and have appropriate company documentation and records in place. This is known as subcontractor vetting, or competency evaluation, and is a requirement by legislation when employing subcontractors.

“The vetting of all your subcontractors’ health and safety documents can be very onerous for employers.  And, more importantly, you need experience in assessing their competency to ensure you are asking for the right documents and to be able to recognise if the subcontractor is competent to undertake the proposed tasks. CQMS has over 10 years’ experience in carrying out all subcontractor vetting and competency evaluations.”

Your obligations

Before employing subcontractors, employers have a duty to carry out an evaluation to ensure they are competent and adequately resourced. This evaluation may include:
•   Reviewing company documentation
•   Reviewing training records, including the use of any plant, equipment or tools
•   Ensuring appropriate insurances are in place.

How CQMS can help you

Says Wayne:
“At CQMS we have been undertaking subcontractor vetting since 2000 for our clients. We have conducted thousands of competency assessments covering a wide variety of trades, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation and peace of mind for our clients. Assessment is carried out to core criteria detailed within Appendix 4 of the CDM ACoP.”

CQMS make key evaluation details on each subcontractor available to our clients 24/7 via a secure area on our website (http://www.healthandsafetyconsultancyandtraining.co.uk/).

Wayne continues:

“Furthermore, we understand that clients may have specific in-house forms,  i.e. questionnaires, which form part of their audit process and therefore we can incorporate these forms into our system in the subcontractor vetting and evaluation process.”
