Will Bashor’s Biography, Jean-Baptiste CleryJean-Baptiste Clery (Eyewitness to Louis XVI & Marie-Antoinette's Nightmare) reveals this valet's story which has been largely forgotten--except for the accusation that he betrayed his masters. The author, however, has evidence that clears his name.
By: Diderot Press Jan. 11, 2012 - PRLog -- The biography of King Louis XVI’s personal valet de chambre, Jean-Baptiste Clery, narrates the royal family’s captivity in a damp medieval prison, their cruel treatment by callous guards, and their anguish at being condemned to the guillotine’s blade.
What led this young man to volunteer, at great risk to his own life, to continue his service with the royal family? His loyalty resulted in his own imprisonment, and he was repeatedly sentenced to death. Although the sentence was never carried out, he died alone in exile, estranged from his wife and family. Phyllis Singer, editor-in-chief of Promenade Magazine, wrote: “[Bashor’s] H. Will Bashor, Ph.D. has taught at Ohio University, Ohio Dominican University, and Franklin University where he currently teaches Global Issues. He received his doctorate from the American Graduate School in Paris in 2005, and the DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française), the only French language diploma recognized by the French Ministry of Education, in 2006. He is the author of Oh, Leonard! (Hairdresser to Marie-Antoinette & Other Sublime Ladies), also published by Diderot Press. End
