By: Lori Dolnick Susan Serra, whose ancestral birthplace is Bornholm, Denmark, visits the Nordic region at least once a year to hand pick exclusive objects for her clientele. The mother, daughter Serra team have been collectors of Scandinavian artwork for years – developing their personal design aesthetic and cultivating relationships with the craftspeople and studios who make them. “Our travels and heritage beckon us to share our love for Scandinavian handmade crafts,” states founder Susan Serra. “Each of our curated works represents a one-of-a-kind artistic expression. It is with great pride and pleasure that we introduce these artisans to the American market for the first time.” Meet the Artisans Scandinavia is home to a vibrant community of artisans and craftspeople whose calming modern influences and eclectic nature, in many cases, have never been revealed outside the region. The following includes a small selection of these very talented designers whose work is featured on Scandinavian Made. In the words of one artist, “I hope that each piece will bring their new owners happiness and radiate my joy and the calm nature of Bornholm (an island in Denmark).” Simon Koefoed– Ceramist and Designer Simon Koefoed creates domestic porcelain ware, hand-thrown on a wheel with strong aesthetic and useful qualities. He likes his work to have a clear idea, leaning towards organic and living shapes. Koefoed lives and works on Bornholm, a beautiful Danish island in the Baltic Sea. Claire Marie Lehmann – Handmade Ceramic Vases Claire Marie Lehmann believes in a ceramic tradition signaling unique craftsmanship, giving the customers a true feeling of material and underlining the word “handmade.” Swedish Rug Weavers Swedish Rug Weavers are a rare and distinct breed – an art form that is unfortunately disappearing as fewer and fewer artisans take up the trade. Handwoven and vintage Swedish rugs are crafted in the same manner as they have been for over 100 years – from recycled cloth gathered locally from old jeans, linens, curtains, etc. No two rugs are the same; each is genuinely unique and conveys a piece of personal history with it (summer dresses, work clothes or tattered drapes).
