More and more companies are moving towards health insurance premiums based on employee salary, this has created the need for greater flexibility in premium calculations.  This need will continue to grow when health insurance exchanges, as required by the healthcare reform law, begin to operate in 2014.  At that time, if an employee’s health insurance premium exceeds 9.5 percent of total household income, then that employee can opt out of the company provided plan and instead select subsidized coverage on the state’s health insurance exchange.  For each instance where this scenario occurs the employer can be penalized up to $3,000.
