Dec. 27, 2011 - PRLog -- What Causes My Network To Become Slow over Time?

Sometime whenever we are at work surfing the internet or transferring file, we automatically assume
“oh it’s the internet, its acting up”. But working in the IT industry I have discovered that there is more to
that. I will narrow it down to few reasons why your Network would become slow over time, whether its
your service provider, bandwidth, or your LAN etc….You risk paying more for addition bandwidth you
don’t really need. Analyze your current network, since your service provider is a recurring cost.

Top 5 reasons for slowness in the network.

1)   Service provider may be working in your area, cable and DSL are not as reliability as T1 or T3.
2)   Scheduled backups that are in your LAN: Many backup-to-disk products can be scheduled to run at a certain time at of day        they can really tie up your network.
3)   Virus scan updates that are being distributing inside the LAN
4)   Flat network: have disadvantages that can cause network traffic problems within the LAN.
5)   File size being transferred through the network or video streaming.

Steps you can take to find out and resolve the issues.

•   Try to find a pattern of when the spike happens. For example, does it happens at the same time of the day when the slowness occurs?
•   If it makes business sense you should have the T1 and for backup the cable connection (cost). The CISCO routers can be configured to where if one fails the other circuit can start working.
•   Scheduled backups should be run after business hours, when no one is on the network.
•   Having VLAN your network can make a difference
•   Adding a content filter to the network managing the use of bandwidth.
•   Might be your switches cannot handle the traffic within the network. CISCO has switches 10/100,1gig,10gig
