History of the RateTea.com and RateTea.net domains:
RateTea was launched as RateTea.net in September of 2009, as the first interactive web community where anyone could rate and review teas. The RateTea.net domain was originally registered in April of 2009. Although many fans referred to the site simply as RateTea, the official name used in branding, PR, and marketing material was RateTea.net. The domain RateTea.com was unavailable when the site was originally developed, having been registered by Joshua Chamberlain of J-Tea International, a small specialty tea company based in Eugene, OR. The .net domain was chosen as a next-best alternative to the .com.
Joshua Chamberlain originally had plans to develop the domain into an interactive tea rating website, much like what RateTea has become, but he never followed through on this idea. Chamberlain was generous enough to make an offer to sell the RateTea.com domain to RateTea.net / Merit Exchange LLC, below cost, but shortly after making this offer, the domain expired and was registered directly by Merit Exchange LLC. RateTea has issued a statement recognizing Chamberlain for his integrity and generosity in offering to sell the domain below cost.
Old links will remain valid:
RateTea will retain possession of the old RateTea.net domain indefinitely, and all pages will be redirected by 301 redirects to the new domain. Although the old links will remain valid, RateTea.com has become the preferred domain, and the name RateTea the preferred name by which to refer to the website.
