Orange County Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine (OCPAM) has recently acquired a new and revolutionary treatment that has been approved, under certain conditions, and while under the supervision of a psychiatrist, to treat Major Depressive Disorder.

There are several manufacturers of  Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) equipment, but only one that is actually approved by the FDA.  OCPAM, being dedicated to the best practice of medicine possible, has elected to obtain the NeuroStar machine that is the only TMS equipment that has passed the FDA's stringent approval process.

Currently TMS is approved specifically for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder as a secondary treatment, following the failure of first line treatments such as anti-depressants.  Common off label uses of TMS that will be utilized at OCPAM will be to treat addiction, post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorders, and ADD.

TMS uses magnetic waves to stimulate electrical activity in localized areas of the brain, as prescribed by your trained psychiatrist.  These stimulated areas of the brain are believed to become activated when they previously were underactive.  This increase in activity is reparative in nature and can improve mood and brain function where other treatments have failed.

OCPAM will be providing TMS therapy following an initial consultation with Valeh Karimkhani, D.O. who will then supervise the course of treatment with TMS.  Many people who undergo TMS therapy are able to reduce the amount of medications they take or discontinue medication use altogether.  This is of course only under the supervision of a qualified psychiatrist.  Patients should never discontinue medication without the expressed recommendation of their psychiatrist.

TMS is considered to have a very low side effect profile, much lower than most medications.
