Dec. 10, 2011 - PRLog -- What are automotive engines and transmissions?  These are the power plants of your vehicle.  The engine creates all of the power while the transmission puts this power to great use (at the wheels).  Engines use gasoline, diesel or electricity to power your car.  Most cars use gasoline and the engine is a 4 cycle engine with multiple cylinders.  Some cars use diesel fuel which is also a 4 cycle engine, however the engine has many different parts from a gasoline engine.  Some cars are hybrid using a combination of gasoline and electric power.  These cars have a gasoline engine and an electric motor to power the car.  Then, there are even some fully electric cars that use electricity and an electric motor to power the car.

Transmissions use this motor power to propel the vehicle into motion.  Some transmissions use a clutch with a manual gear shifter.  These are referred to as manual or standard transmissions since the gears are manually switched by the driver.  Many transmissions are automatic transmissions.  These transmissions use internal clutches that are automatically shifted by a computer or a mechanical group of parts such as a valve body and governor or manual pressure valve.  The automatic transmission is much nicer to have since you do not have to manually switch the gears.  Then there is a CVT transmission.  These transmissions are also automatic, however they work entirely different.  Simoustainly, it changes pulley sizes using a chain to mimic gears and move the car.  The CVT uses a computer to control the pulley system inside the transmission.

Engines and transmissions require service and maintenance.  Oil changes, air filters, tune-ups, fluid changes and inspections are all typical maintenance on engines and transmissions.  An auto mechanic is required to perform these service procedures and repairs when needed.  All you have to remember is to follow your automotive manufacturers recommended maintenance schedule and have a qualified auto mechanic perform the services.  Take care or your engine and transmission so that your car will take care of you.
