The 5k run, led by the Saint Joseph Mercy Health Care system, is a celebration to conclude a 10-week, after-school program that advocates girls' personal power and importance of staying active and healthy. The after-school program combines training for the run with activities that enhance self esteem and personal power. The girls also complete a community service project throughout the 10 weeks. Overall, the goal of Girls on the Run is to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development. In addition to character building, the girls are also emboldened to engage in open conversations with their family members about what is going in their everyday lives.

With more than 200 events across the U.S. and Canada, the New Balance Girls on the Run 5k is the largest 5k in the world targeted to the youth. Results and finishing times are not recorded in the run; the event is aimed to be non-competitive and every participant receives a medal at the finish line.
