The book was created by students of the York, ME School System. Sales proceeds will go to help the Center forward its mission of caring for sick and injured animals.
By: Yeoman Technologies Freyja is a Peregrine Falcon who was injured in a car accident; she now lives at the Center for Wildlife in Cape Neddick, Maine and travels throughout the region educating children on wildlife and conservation. Her story is lovingly told by first-time author, 8-year-old Calvin Healey, accompanied by drawings that were selected as part of a school contest to help raise awareness about the Center for Wildlife. Children of all ages will laugh and learn as they read about Freya's story and the plight of the Peregrine Falcon, a breed driven to the edge of extinction in the 1970s. The book includes fascinating facts about Peregrine Falcons, some of the science behind animal conservation, and Freyja's own touching story. The book closes with action steps kids can take to help keep animals safe in the wild, along with helpful links to websites where they can learn more about The Center for Wildlife, Peregrine Falcons and other endangered species. According to Susan Hansen, Executive Director of the Center for Wildlife, “this is more than a kid's wildlife book, this story is told through the eyes of real children, with added facts about challenges falcons face; DDT, pollution, traffic and even littering. The book is perfect for teaching children about wildlife, conservation, and what they can do to help protect animals. It even contains a coloring page and links to online resources to bolster learning. The Story of Freyja makes learning about wildlife fun and educational for kids.” The book is being released just in time for the holidays, and children can keep the learning going all year long by interacting with Freyja on her Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ About the Center for Wildlife The Center for Wildlife is a private, non-profit organization whose mission is to rehabilitate and provide sanctuary for sick and injured wild animals, and to promote respect for wildlife and the environment.
