Nov. 5, 2011 - PRLog -- World renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Joseph Purita’s use of stem cell therapy on ailing athletes creates a media buzz worthy of celebrity status.  The Institute of Regenerative & Molecular Orthopaedics facility is one of just a handful of medical centers performing stem cell therapy and PRP treatment, but it is Dr. Purita’s recent successes with world-class athletes on their way to recovery from injuries that has truly set his practice apart.

This success has gotten Dr. Purita’s work featured in numerous publications. From the New York Times to ESPN the Magazine, the media have been abuzz about Dr. Purita's recent work with New York Yankees pitcher Bartolo Colon who has emerged from shoulder and elbow injuries to post an excellent return season to the pitcher’s mound.

In March 2010, Dr. Purita traveled to Dominican Republic to perform stem cell therapy on Colon's. There Purita harvested marrow from a 36-year-old Colon’s pelvis and spun it in a high-speed centrifuge to procure mesenchymal-rich serum and then injected Colon's cells into his right shoulder and elbow. This entire process lasted only about an hour but the resulting benefits lasted beyond Colon’s 2011 season with the New York Yankees.

Dr. Purita’s methods are notable mainly because, although simple, they are truly on the cutting edge of medicine. As with any ground-breaking medical procedure, there are always questions -- especially as it relates to professional sports and leagues’ efforts to eliminate unfair advantages. Dr. Purita was gracious enough to meet with Major League Baseball officials to clear any misconceptions and doubts about the procedure.

As stem cell treatment expands beyond the treatment of injuries, Dr. Purita remains one of the world’s foremost authorities.  Today, stem cell researchers are looking into how they can use therapies similar to those used by Dr. Purita to treat as many as 22 diseases. Tomorrow, surgeons hope to use stem cells to treat such things as heart attacks and diabetes.

The Institute of Regenerative and Molecular Orthopedics is a hybrid of traditional orthopedics, cutting edge regenerative medicine utilizing stem cell treatment (including bone marrow and fat mesenchymal stem cells), platelet rich plasma (PRP), various growth factors and supplements. This combination of different techniques (many of which we have devised and are our own intellectual property) leads to non-surgical solutions for many common orthopedic problems. These conditions run the gamut from simple tennis elbow problems to degenerative arthritis of the major joints of the body which would normally require joint replacements. Between these two extremes lie the vast majority of orthopedic aliments including rotator cuff injuries and enthesopathy, herniated discs and trigger points in the spine, a variety of ligamentous and meniscal injuries of the knee, ankle, and hip.
