90 Years of Public Education Excellence

WABAN, MASS.,  November 4, 2011---The Angier Elementary School, part of the Newton public school system, is proud to announce Angier Through the Decades, its 90th Birthday Celebration. The festivities will kick off on the morning of Friday, November 18, with an all-school assembly that will walk through the decades, beginning with songs from the 1920s, when Angier was brand new. With local dignitaries including Mayor Setti Warren expected to attend, the program will also feature remarks in memory of the school’s namesake, Albert Edgar Angier, a Waban native, who was killed at age 22 in Revillon, France, in World War I.

After the school assembly, the entire adult Angier community, including present parents and teachers as well as alumni, is invited to join the celebration by attending an evening cocktail party from 7:30pm to 11pm at the Windsor Club, 1601 Beacon Street, Waban. Beer/wine, appetizers and dessert will be served. Proceeds of the $25 admission fee (payable at the door) will go toward creating a permanent Angier archive. (R.S.V.P.s may be sent to angiercelebrates90@gmail.com.)

Angier School, “a fine, modern, red-brick elementary schoolhouse of the 12-room type” was built in 1921 after the previous school on site, the Roger Wolcott School, grew too small to accommodate the children of Waban. In November 1921, a ceremony was held in the new auditorium (now the library) to open the school and dedicate it in honor of Lt. Albert Angier, the only local son killed in the Great War.

According to Waban, Early Days, the unique part of the program was the dedication speech by Saville Davis, president of the class of 1922. He said, “The pupils of Albert Edgar Angier School are deeply appreciative of the gift of this beautiful building which the citizens of Newton, have dedicated to the cause of education. …, you, the citizens of Newton, will see that you have made a wise investment. As a token of our present and future gratitude we do solemnly vow that we will protect the building and cherish for it a fair and noble name.”

A touching moment of the evening’s exercises was when Jimmie Marsh, a sixth grade boy, proposed a ‘silent tribute of one minute to him for whom our school is named.’ Jimmie was a little friend of Albert Angier and was proud to honor his hero.”

Few schools or indeed public buildings of any type can expect to see 90 years of service. And though Angier’s beloved brick building is in need of attention, awaiting replacement or repair, we are happy to mark the momentous occasion of the 90 years of excellence in educating children within its nurturing walls.

Today’s Angier students, by far a more diverse group than their earlier counterparts, will honor their school with the traditional singing of its song:

Angier School Song  - 1921

There’s a school
in dear old Waban,
That our hearts can ne’er forget.

It stands for truth and justice
Her honor we hold highest,
And we’ll ever faithful be.

Albert Angier, Albert Angier,
Happy all our days with thee,
You’re the pride and joy of Wa-ban
And we’ll e’er be true to thee.
