Oct. 31, 2011 - PRLog -- Bluewater Bio International, the provider of HYBACS, a high-performance and highly cost-effective wastewater treatment process is pleased to announce that it has entered into an agreement with Infilco Degremont, Inc (SUEZ Environnement) to market technology for energy-efficient nutrient removal across North America. Under the agreement, which the companies executed several months ago, Infilco Degremont (“IDI”) will provide HYBACS to municipal and industrial waste water treatment plants across the continent.

Following nearly two years of increasingly close collaboration which has seen the companies enter their agreement, the two companies are working towards the deployment of a full-scale HYBACS demonstration plant in the NE region of the country, where reliable nutrient removal technologies are in particularly high demand driven by stringent regulations. Bluewater Bio has supplied one of its SMART™ Units, which drives the HYBACS process, and IDI has supplied the plant, including aeration tanks and clarifiers, into which the SMART Unit™ is being installed. The plant as a whole has been designed by IDI to be mobile, despite its large size, and the customized SMART Unit™ allows for the flexibility to operate on different flows and loads at other sites in the future. The demo plant is expected to be installed at site by the end of November 2011, and will be one of IDI’s largest.

Making their first public appearance together, Bluewater Bio recently joined IDI on its stand at the Water Environment Federation Technical Conference (WEFTEC) in Los Angeles, where the technology drew a very high level of interest.

Infilco Degremont believes there is an excellent market for HYBACS to deliver a cost effective solution for the nutrient removal market and highlight the low energy consumption and ease of upgrade as key advantages in the US market. Tony Hargrave, Chief Executive Officer of Infilco Degremont commented: “IDI has been working very closely with Bluewater Bio for quite some time to bring this project to fruition as we now prepare to launch this technology in the US, as part of IDI’s portfolio of wastewater technologies. We see great potential and many opportunities for HYBACS in North America.”

Daniel Ishag, CEO Bluewater Bio, commented: “This marks an exciting development in the history of Bluewater Bio and we have worked closely with IDI in the USA. The US is an enormous prospective market for HYBACS, particularly as a significant proportion of waste water assets were installed in the 1950’s and 60’s, and HYBACS is perfectly suited to the upgrading of such plants which is frequently required. Bluewater Bio has worked hard to establish itself in international markets such as Europe, Africa, Middle East and China and we could not wish for a better partner to now go forward with into North America over the coming years.”

About Bluewater Bio

Bluewater Bio is a global specialist in the treatment of wastewater. Bluewater Bio’s flagship product is its patented HYBACS® technology, a high-performance, cost effective advanced biological solution for the treatment of wastewater.

Bluewater Bio also has a growing technology portfolio through the acquisitions of FilterClear Ltd’s portfolio of high performance multimedia filters and of Water Innovate Ltd, the spin-out from Cranfield University’s School of Water Sciences. Bluewater Bio’s suite of technologies benefit from both in-house R&D and product development, and from collaboration with key technical partners including Cranfield, as a result of the Water Innovate acquisition, and also Nankai University in China.

HYBACS®, the Company’s lead technology, has been gaining commercial traction among a growing number of companies in Europe, South Africa and in the Middle East, on the basis of its commercial superiority to comparable existing high performance treatment processes worldwide, across a wide range of treatment requirements. HYBACS® is an innovative nutrient removal wastewater treatment technology that was developed from a process originating in South Korea. It is applicable to new as well as existing works, over a wide range of scales, and has been proven commercially in over 25 applications, with Bluewater Bio’s latest contract win being for the 100,000m3/day upgrade of the largest existing treatment works in Bahrain, at Tubli Bay.

HYBACS® is not only highly applicable to the municipal treatment sector and a much wider range of high strength organic industrial wastewaters from food or beverage production, leachate and livestock waste treatment. Bluewater Bio aims to present customers with solutions which provide benefits in capital and lifetime cost, treatment performance, ease and speed of plant deployment, and well suited to combine with tertiary filtration for high quality water reuse applications.

HYBACS® is a ‘HYBrid Activated Sludge’ technology which deploys Bluewater Bio’s proprietary SMART™ Units ahead of an activated sludge process which recycles back to the SMART™ Units. SMART™ Units are low footprint, low energy, very high-performance rotating reactors featuring high-void mesh plates which fill with active biomass. HYBACS®, whilst also applicable to greenfield installations, is often an ideal solution for the upgrade and expansion of existing wastewater treatment plants where some combination of additional capacity and/or increased effluent quality requirements is needed. The SMART™ Units represent the first stage of a two biological stage process, followed by clarification. The SMART (Shaft Mounted Advanced Reactor Technology) Units feature attached biomass which offers typically 90 (ninety) times greater treatment performance per unit volume than a conventional aeration tank. The second stage is an activated sludge process, with suspended biomass. It has been demonstrated that the HYBACS® system can produce effluents with qualities compliant with the most stringent European nutrient removal standards.
