BE STREETSMART AND HELP THE HOMELESS

The countdown is on for restaurants who want to get involved in StreetSmart to help Cornish charities for the fourth year running, whilst enjoying some excellent marketing benefits.

StreetSmart is a campaign which raises funds for the homeless via restaurants adding an optional £1 onto each table’s bill during November and December.  All administration costs are paid by national StreetSmart sponsor Deutsche Bank, which means that every pound donated goes to the charities.

Excellently, all money raised in Cornwall stays in the county.  Over £20,000 has been raised by Cornish restaurants for our county’s homeless charities during the past four years through this simple scheme.

Helen Mulhern, Director of Eventy – Marketing & PR, the organisation co-ordinating the scheme here explains how simple it is to take part:
“The mechanism is straightforward.  Starting on the 1st November, participating restaurants add £1 to each bill and although the customer can decline to donate, most happily offer £1 and sometimes more.  Restaurants keep count of how much has been raised and brief their staff to thank customers and answer questions related to the scheme – raising both funding and understanding of these important causes.

Last year 14 participating restaurants around Cornwall raised over £7,500 that went directly to St Petroc’s Society and the Cornwall Women’s Refuge Trust.   These two charities along with Cornwall Foodbank will benefit again this year. The funds are especially vital since many organisations are facing funding cuts, despite being more in demand because of the current economic climate.

This year there are over 20 establishments involved in StreetSmart, from fine dining rooms to beach cafes, from Lands End to Wadebridge.  These include Archie Brown’s – Truro and Penzance, Blue Beach Bar & Brasserie - Porthtowan, Bustophers - Truro, Carn Brea Castle - Camborne, Fireside at the Cove - Lamorna, Gylly Beach Café - Falmouth, Harbourside at the GreenBank Hotel - Falmouth, Indaba Fish: In the City - Truro and On the Beach - Falmouth, Lewinnick Lodge - Newquay, Miss Peapods Café - Penryn, Nathan Outlaw’s Seafood & Grill - Rock, Stein’s Cornish Arms - Padstow, The Golden Lion - Stithians, The Gurnard’s Head - St.Ives, No 1 Rock Road - Rock, The Old Quay Inn - Deveron, The Roseland Inn - Philliegh-in-Roseland, The Victory Inn - St Mawes, Treloyhan Manor - St.Ives, Trevaskis Farm - Hayle, Waterfront Bar & Café - Polzeath and TwoTen200 - Falmouth.

Helen added, “StreetSmart runs during November and December, when temperatures start dropping.  Giving an extra £1 after a lovely meal is not a big ask for the diners and it goes directly to those suffering real hardship.”

Foodbank is a new beneficiary this year.  With branches all over the county, this charity delivers food to local people in crisis.  Foodbank drop-in centres allow people to talk about their problems over a hot drink and have access to information that may help them to break the cycle of poverty.  Crucially, they can also collect nutritionally balanced food to feed themselves and their family for three days.  It is sad but true that Foodbanks are seeing a dramatic increase in the number of people relying on their services.  The first half of the year saw as many people needing support as in the entire previous year.

St Petroc’s Society offers housing and support for the single homeless in our area.  Hostels give much needed breathing space to some of the most vulnerable people in Cornwall.  The funds raised by StreetSmart support the Cold Weather Provision, enabling the street homeless to sleep and rest in St Petroc’s services whenever the temperature drops below zero.

The Cornwall Women’s Refuge Trust provides a safe supportive environment for women and children who have escaped domestic violence.  Last year’s funds made a big difference, through paying for bedrooms to be refurbished and finished off with new curtains, lamps and bedding.  The remaining funds have helped to keep the support groups running, delivering sessions on healthy eating, first aid, building self-esteem and other life skills.

StreetSmart has a raft of celebrity supporters of whom Gordon Ramsay is one: “StreetSmart has become part of Christmas for us. It’s everyone’s chance to do the right thing at the right time with only the gentlest nudge.” Another keen supporter, Stephen Fry, puts the case in his own style.  “As seasonal a presence on the menu as parsnips and winter greens, StreetSmart dishes always do your heart good.”

So there is something positive that we can do for those less fortunate than ourselves this winter – we can eat at a StreetSmart restaurant and agree that £1 is added to our restaurant bill.  Through doing this we can help to provide an alternative for homeless people in our county.   For more information, please visit www.streetsmart.org.uk or contact Eventy on 01326 376273.
