Oct. 10, 2011 - PRLog -- One of the most exciting times of any school year is when the opportunity to engage students in international or domestic educational student travel comes about. On the front end, there will be a lot of preparation taking place with finding appropriate transportation, room and board and travel locations; however, the back end is just as important. This will include preparing students for an upcoming school tour. Students must be educated in a number of areas before embarking on a school tour. While each faculty or trip coordinator will have different expectations, students must always be equipped with the following knowledge:

What the educational school tour is about
How the educational school tour will assist in their learning
The learning objectives for the school tour
Where the educational school tour will take place
How this school tour will correlate with civic responsibilities in their life and community

A set number of policies and procedures should be put into place to ensure there are no misunderstandings about how the trip will take place or how students are to operate as a student travel participant.

Student travelers will more than likely be concerned with the hands-on experiences they will get to encounter when traveling. If so, it may be a good idea to allow students to vote on a travel location from a selection of appropriate places. Once a destination is set, students and educators should compose an appropriate objective for the student school tour. Once this has been established, the pre-trip preparation can begin and participating students should lend an active hand in the responsibilities of getting things in proper order for the trip. This may include scheduling a possible fundraiser to earn trip funds or finding out travel information.

Preparing students for a school tour should be fun. Faculty leaders should add a touch of excitement and personality to each school tour. Good ideas include: assigning a role to each student or having students engage in daily journal entries that document their domestic or international travel experience. The extended efforts put into the preparation stage of a school tour will pay off greatly once the adventure takes way.
