Sept. 20, 2011 - PRLog -- NEW YORK - Rare earth lithium-yttrium battery inventor and Chinese clean energy pioneer Winston Chung received the 2011 South-South Award for Corporate Social Responsibility on September 19, 2011 at the 2011 South-South Awards in New York City.

Held one day prior to the start of a series of high-level meetings of the 66th United
Nations General Assembly, the ceremony was attended by information and communications technology industry leaders, global health industry leaders, and Heads of State. The 2011 South-South Awards appropriately themed “Digital Health for Digital Development,” recognized outstanding innovations and applications of information and communication technologies towards achieving health-related millennium goals.

Winston Chung, founder of Winston Global Energy, is a leading lithium battery innovator and fuel cell research philanthropist. His collective investments in transportation enterprises bring together the technology of China and design skill of the United States, and his promotion and philanthropic support of green energy concepts and leading-edge battery technology has made him a global thought leader in the sustainable transportation sector.

As a corporate leader, Mr. Chung has devoted his resources and intellectual interests to developing sustainable energy solutions that will benefit the global community now and in the future. His commitment to lead the way in a global reduction of energy consumption was recently marked by his $10 million donation to the University of California, Riverside, to support clean battery power, solar power, and sustainable transportation research. The university’s new research center, named the Winston Chung Global Energy Center, will focus on Mr. Chung’s "life source rare earth lithium batteries," bio-inspired technology” and the development of clean energy and energy storage. US education leaders believe Mr. Chung’s philanthropic contributions coupled with his clean energy inventions will result in generations of students and faculty researchers sharing their knowledge with global communities, as well as in the development of new materials and new energy sources.

“My battery is unique in its ability to provide large quantities of stable power, over long periods of time, without deterioration of the quality or quantity of the power over the life of the battery, “ explains Chung. “No other battery in existence performs as well nor can any other battery meet the need for power storage in the 21st century.  It is the only workable solution for power storage needed in mobile off-grid applications and stationary on-grid applications. It is a technology that has a growing global impact.”

The South-South Awards Ceremony is organized by the International Telecommunication Union, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and South-South News, and is supported by the Permanent Missions of Antigua and Barbuda, Malawi, Dominica, Zambia, Tajikistan, El Salvador and Honduras to the United Nations. Awardees were selected based on an examination of their projects/initiatives/innovations’ global or large-scale impact, scalability, sustainability, and level of innovation.
