This Pune centre is devoted to take best after care and rehabilitation of personnel's of Defence Forces of India who are medically boarded out, i.e. retired form service due to Spinal Cord Injury while serving the nation. This organization firmly believes in the ideology that a soldier dedicates his life for the nation and it is the moral responsibility of the nation to honor his sacrifice and take responsibility of his needs. With 83 single beds and 26 married quarters making a total of 109 bedded Centre, today, Pune centre is the largest centre of its kind in India and one of the largest in South East Asia.
The need for such organizations in the country is immense because paraplegics and tetraplegics suffer from one of the severest forms of physical disability that can inflict an individual. After initial treatment although they become wheelchair borne, but they still require lifelong medical care that aids to prevent future and mitigate existing complications. More than the physical treatment, the mental conditioning for the soldiers is important as most of them suffer from grave depression for not being accepted by their families due to their disability.
The foundation stone of paraplegic institution was laid by General(Late) GG Bewoor, PVSM, the then Chief of Army Staff on 23 June 1973 and the Centre was inaugurated by (Late) Shri Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, the then President of India on 20 Sep 1974.
