About the Author:
Joshua Hammer spent 15 years a foreign correspondent and Bureau Chief for Newsweek magazine, based, successively, in Nairobi, Buenos Aires, Los Angeles, Berlin, Jerusalem, and Cape Town. A Nieman Fellow at Harvard University in 2004-2005, Hammer left Newsweek the following year and became a freelance writer, based in Berlin. He is a contributing writer and editor for Smithsonian magazine and a contributing editor for Outside. He writes regularly for The New York Review of Books, The New York Times, Conde Nast Traveler, Fast Company, and the Atlantic Monthly, among other publications. He is the author of Chosen by God, which was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize; A Season in Bethlehem; and Yokohama Burning.
