Spreading Compassion Through Invention

Breast Cancer Survivor Brenda Jones Joins Host Donna Amos to Share How Her Journey Led Her to Spread Love and Compassion Through Invention
By: Donna Amos

July 26, 2011 - PRLog -- A recent breast cancer survivor, Brenda Jones hated having to wear hideous hospital gowns and decided to make her own. Feeling that she needed to wear something LOUDER than cancer, she wanted something warm, comfortable, fun, and colorful. A friend taught her to sew and together they made the first Hug Wrap, and when she wore it, she turned heads in the hospital! Brenda started making Hug Wraps for other patients and to date has made over 400 wraps, mailing them all over the US, Canada, England, and Poland.

These kimono-style wraps open in the front and come with a belt. They are made of flannel material and come in various sizes and lengths. Designed for ease of use, they are especially helpful to patients who are unable to raise their arms after surgery. The wraps are available for men, women, teens, and children.

Brenda’s ultimate goal is to make Hug Wraps available to patients everywhere. They are hand sewn with love and understanding from one patient to another and give patients back their dignity during difficult treatments.

Brenda is currently working with two area high schools, donating leftover fabric and materials for sewing class students to make pillows, blankets, and Cuddle Bear Hugs—items which are donated to hospitalized children and residents of nursing homes. With this project, Hug Wraps have gone “green,” promoting volunteerism and teaching students the joy of giving back to their community. Brenda is working toward enlisting other high schools to join in the project.

Brenda joins us to discuss the process that led her to inventing the Hug Wrap and where that vision has brought her to today. Brenda’s story is an inspiration for anyone with a dream for creating a new product!
