The Samsung Galaxy Mini is a small, affordable alternative to some of its larger, more expensive cousins.

June 21, 2011 - PRLog -- If you want something cheerfully cheap with a few decent features, this stylish little device makes a rocking spare phone. However, some users may find that it lacks a little too much.

Its looks are definitely worth mention. This is a phone that is strikingly tiny, at only 105g. It's not so small that designers haven't managed to fit a decent 3.1 inch touchscreen on it, however. Its screen is amazingly responsive, especially with Swype thrown in to make texting and typing amazingly easy. Unfortunately, its low resolution makes it difficult to read at times.

For all it may look simple, the Galaxy Mini is actually very well put together. The plastic is of high quality, and it doesn't feel flimsy, cheap, or fragile. We were also pleased to see a rubber covering over the mini-USB port for added protection. Its home key is also a useful addition.

Its operating system consists of the Android 2.2 Froyo. This isn't the most up-to-date version of Android, but neither is it the most obsolete. You can still enjoy instant access to the Andriod Market as well as a few Google related features, including Gmail, Google Maps, Google Talk, and many others. Its only real downside is that it isn't quite as smooth as more modern versions. Most widgets and applications should still work, though you might find some of the more recent ones don't work quite as well as they would on a more recent phone. Its internet connectivity is pretty solid, featuring wi-fi, 3G, HDPSA, Bluetooth, and more. Its quadband technology also ensures that you can use the phone wherever you travel. Alas, its low resolution makes browsing the web a bit of a pain. Even with Swype on board, it's hard to text or type when you're not quite sure what you're doing. However, on the upside, its browser loads pages like lightning, and there is very little that will slow this phone down.

As for its other media, its camera is pretty poor. With only 3 megapixels, no flash, and no autofocus, you're not destined for glory when it comes to your snapshots. If you stick to well lit areas, you may get some decent shots, but anything darker turns into a shadowy, blurry mass. The same principle applies to its video recorder. Its music related features are a bit better equipped, featuring a 3.5 mm headphone jack and DNSe sound enhancement. Sound quality is excellent for both calls and music, and having the universal jack means you can use your own set of headphones or earbuds without having to depend on the set that comes with the box.

The Samsung Galaxy Mini is a bit too dated in some areas to feel like you're carrying a mini universe in your pocket. However, some users may not feel the need for this. If you want a cheaper, smaller Android phone than what's currently on the market, this may be right up your alley. While it's hardly revolutionary in its features, it has enough to keep most users happy, even with it's low resolution screen. Definitely worth another look.
