Is an Official Facebook iPad App Coming Soon?

June 18, 2011 - PRLog -- Facebook for iPhone is the most-downloaded iPhone app ever, but more than a year after Apple introduced the iPad, there is still a notable lack of an official Facebook app for the device. However, it's rumored that Facebook is preparing to change that.

Citing "people briefed on Facebook's plans," the New York Times' Nick Bilton reports that Facebook will launch its official iPad app within the "coming weeks." Bilton says the app has been brewing for nearly a year and has been designed with the iPad specifically in mind, complementing the tablet's touchscreen interface. The app will reportedly include tablet-optimized versions of Facebook Groups and Facebook Chat and take advantage of the iPad's cameras, allowing users to snap photos and videos on the iPad and upload them directly to Facebook.

A "person who has seen the app" told Bilton that the photo and video features are "amazing, offering full resolution and full-screen images."

"We have a great relationship with Apple that is exemplified by our iPhone application, but with regards to an iPad application we have nothing to announce now, and cannot comment on future Facebook products," Jaime Schopflin, a Facebook communications manager said.

Reps from Apple didn't respond to questions about a Facebook iPad app.

It's been a long wait for an official Facebook iPad app, leaving room for third-party developers to release their own such apps like Friendly and iFace, which have been some of the most popular iPad apps in the App Store. Bilton claims Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been closely involved in the development of the app, but it's possible he wasn't always on board. Last fall, he addressed the absence of an official iPad apps.

"iPad's not mobile," he said. "I don't mean to be rude to Apple. iPad just isn't mobile in the same way [an iPhone] is."

Despite the lack of a Facebook iPad app, last month reports surfaced that Facebook was hiring engineers for a desktop software team, which seemed to suggest that the company might be developing a desktop app the existence of an iPad app has even been confirmed.
