31st Annual Symphony Above The Clouds with Celebrity Conductor Astronaut Bob Stewart

"An outdoor evening of fun with music by the Colorado Springs Philharmonic with associate conductor Thomas Wilson and Ceol Ceili (Irish folk music group).  Also, we plan to have city-sponsored fireworks, weather permitting after dark, and Ft Carson cannons," said Nancy Spradling, UTE Pass Symphony Guild President.

The celebrity conductor is astronaut Brig. Gen. Robert L. “Bob” Stewart, U.S. Army-retired, who resides in Woodland Park.

Gates open at 5:00 p.m. with Ceol Ceili beginning at 5:30 p.m. and the symphony playing at 7:30 p.m.

“Everyone is encouraged to bring lawn chairs or be prepared to sit on the ground as seats in the metal bleachers are limited,” Spradling said.

People are also encouraged to bring jackets and a picnic dinner or snacks. The Woodland Park Booster Club will sell hot dogs, hamburgers, snacks and drinks.

No dogs, smoking or alcoholic beverages will be allowed on the field, according to event organizers.

The Ute Pass Symphony Guild has brought the event to Woodland Park for more than 30 years through donations from businesses and patrons.  "We really appreciate the generosity of the Teller County citizens, businesses, and government entities so that the Ute Pass Symphony Guild is able to present this concert,” Spradling said.

Stewart remains an aerospace consultant and is a frequent lecturer and classroom instructor on selected topics having to do with manned space flight. His talks before school children, civic clubs and groups are a testament to his faith and belief in America’s greatness.

Stewart was the first Army officer to fly in space. He logged two flights before bringing his talents closer to earth. He has more than 6000 hours flying time, including 2500 hours in helicopters and 3500 hours in fixed wing aircraft (1300 in jets). Stewart was a civilian flight instructor before entering the U.S. Army.

He received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics (’64) from the University of Southern Mississippi and a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering (’71) from the University of Texas. His professional education and training includes numerous military schools in this country and overseas.

The Colorado Springs Philharmonic has been an amazing partner over the years, performing on July 5th in weather conditions that have been truly awful at times. “In the 30 years of our association, the concert has only been cancelled because of weather twice.
