New Fixed Networks market report from Business Monitor International: "Netherlands Telecommunications Report Q2 2011"

May 28, 2011 - PRLog -- Mobile services continue to grow in the Dutch telecoms market, although growth has slowed significantly. The focus for operators is driving revenue increases by encouraging subscribers to spend more on their phones. Market leader KPN Mobile reported strong uptake of smartphones, with the devices accounting for over half of new postpaid connections and about 40% of its postpaid subscribers using a smart device. In the long term, this will continue to increase, providing KPN and its mobile rivals with plenty of opportunity for further upgrading. The popularity of new devices such as tablet computers may also provide new opportunities to generate greater revenues from data services. Operators will increasingly look to these new options as voice revenues continue to decline. As the costs of smartphones decline, prepaid subscribers will also aim to upgrade, a development that will benefit all operators in the market.

Broadband offers the greatest growth potential for the market, although operators are also experiencing a slowdown. Investment is already taking place in higher speed options such as fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) providing a long-term plan for constantly growing data demand. However, demand for fibre services has yet to really take off and this has resulted in operators investing in expensive infrastructure without generating much revenue so far. A growing array of internet-based services though, will persuade more customers to sign up to the latest services. Cable operators have been doing particularly well, with a greater proportion of their broadband subscribers using higher speed services. Nevertheless, DSL remains the most popular form of connection and will do so for some time.

The fixed voice market on the other hand, continues to decline. Fewer subscribers are holding on to their fixed-line connection and are not using it much. There were less than 4mn VoIP connections in the Netherlands at the end of 2010, up 3% y-o-y. VoIP is providing incumbent KPN with the opportunity to offset some of its declining fixed lines, but revenues from voice services are declining across the board as subscribers sign up to mobile alternatives.

The Netherlands remains in third place in BMI's Business Environment Ratings, its combination of affluent population and small country size help to keep it among the top ranked markets in the region, even though the addressable market is smaller than many of its peers. Its Country Risks and Industry Risks scores remain high, reflecting the good environment for businesses with the Dutch regulator OPTA, in particular, standing out for its light touch and concentration on competition.
