NRMA Vehicle Running Costs

May 26, 2011 - PRLog -- Small' doesn't always mean 'cheap' – that's the message from the NRMA after analysing the annual running costs of 1,200 new vehicles.

The NRMA  has released this year's extensive range of running costs across all vehicle sizes while re-launching the improved running costs calculator – a free application that helps motorists figure out their weekly vehicle running costs.

NRMA Motoring & Services vehicle expert David Carr warned consumers to be careful with their vehicle choices as costs could fluctuate by hundreds of dollars per week between vehicles in the same size or class.

'The cheapest vehicle to run, the Suzuki Alto, costs $89.61 per week, while other cars in the same light car class could cost more than $200 per week to operate," Mr Carr said.

"The disparity between the cheapest and most expensive cars to own and run in each class could run into the thousands over a year."

Mr Carr said there had been a trend towards smaller vehicle purchases over the past decade.

"Fuel costs have become quite important in the family budget with many families opting for smaller and more fuel efficient models," Mr Carr said.

"As erratic as fuel prices are, NRMA's running costs calculator caters for this by allowing the user to enter the price of petrol as it changes, even on a daily basis.

"Users can also enter their purchase price and insurance price into the calculator to provide them with an accurate whole of life cost for keeping their car on the road.

"The running costs calculator is the only one of its kind in Australia and could really help planning the weekly budget."

The 2011 running costs calculator includes analysis of more than 1,200 vehicles (up from 600 in 2010) and provides car buyers with an ANCAP, Greenhouse Gas and electronic stability control rating, making new car buying easier.
