Dark real wood floors are rising in popularity

Just a few years ago, mid-toned oak flooring was one of the most popular wood floors, however darker tones of solid oak floor are now quickly rising in popularity.  Darker real wood floors are now considered to be extremely stylish and sophisticated by leading interior designers.  Before, dark shades of wooden floor were thought to make a room seem smaller.
However, the most recent trend is to pair a dark engineered oak floor, stained almost black with white walls to create a striking contrast, and to fake the illusion of space.  Furniture and soft furnishings in white and other light tones complement the look perfectly.  
Distressed engineered wood flooring is also a popular flooring choice at the moment. However, when choosing a distressed floor you should always choose a hand scraped floor over a floor which has been scraped by a machine.
This is because a machine scraped wood floor replicates the same pattern across all of the floorboards- creating a corn row effect. Distressed floors are a particularly good choice of hardwood flooring  if you expect that your floor will be subjected to a lot of wear and tear- such as if you have pets or children, as distressed floors simply look better as they age.
