PRLog (Press Release) - May 12, 2011 - Hana's KEB Acquisition To Change Sector Dynamics  Hana Financial Group's acquisition of Korea Exchange Bank will turn the former into a major force in  the domestic market, but fiercer competition within the sector could put a ceiling on South Korean banks'  profitability.    Hana Financial Group's acquisition of Korea Exchange Bank (KEB) represents one of the country's  biggest banking deals, signalling the rise of a fourth major player in the sector. South Korea's fourth  largest financial services firm has agreed to buy a 51% stake in its smaller rival for KRW4.7trn (US$4.1  billion) from Texan private equity group Lone Star. The deal will expand Hana's asset size from  KRW200trn to KRW316trn (US$274.8bn), allowing it to overtake Shinhan Financial Group (KRW311trn) as South Korea's third largest lender by assets, just behind Woori Finance Holdings (KRW332trn) and KB Financial Group (KRW330trn).    Following Hana's expansionary move, there will be four strong banking groups with similar asset sizes,  suggesting that the highly-saturated sector could see competition intensify further. We expect Hana's  growth to pose a considerable threat to the current 'Big Three', with aggressive promotional moves to  maintain market share likely to become commonplace. For instance, KB Financial Group's Kookmin  Bank has revealed plans to lower corporate lending rates by up to one percentage point to attract more customers. Meanwhile, we also anticipate a proliferation of diversification strategies into new markets by  the other key financial groups in order to sustain their competitiveness.
