April 26, 2011 - PRLog -- LOS ANGELES- April 26, 2011- As their response to the recent tragedies in Japan and New Zealand have shown, the Salvation Army is an institution that remains a constant source of support for those in need. It is a center of hope, a setting where lives can be rebuilt. And the Salvation Army in Compton is turning to Gospel’s newest sensation, Raquel “Roque” Herring to help them in this process.

Roque, who recently released her first Gospel/Inspirational single “Thank You,” will perform this popular tune and other songs from her soon-to-be released album during the Salvation Army’s fashion show and fundraiser 736 East Compton Blvd at 11am on May 7.
“I am excited about performing at the Salvation Army event,” said Roque pronounced Rock-Key, “It is such a huge organization and it is very successful at what it does.

Roque’s music and personal testimony inspires and uplifts those going through storms. She speaks candidly about her roller-coaster career in entertainment and the dissolution of her once loving marriage to a top Los Angeles talent manager. She is a former top teen performer and vocalist on Star Search, the first African-American female Mouseketeer and artist with success in theater and Hollywood. But when her marriage ended, she had to struggle to keep fighting for her dreams.

“The songs are written in first person, and it allows me to profess the promises of the Lord,” Roque says. “When you focus on those promises instead of your situation, it changes your heart, lifts your spirit and renews your hope. I am excited to be ministering to people in that capacity.”

Steve “Big City” Wimberly, Roque’s producer, believes her music will appeal to the Salvation Army’s diverse patrons, because her songs transcend ethnic, religious and economic lines.

“She encourages others to let go and not worry about what people might think,” says Wimberly, who has worked with top secular and gospel artists. “She is like a tiny stick of dynamite.”

Ezekiel Guevara, captain of the Salvation Army in Compton, said many people served by the Salvation Army have experienced difficult times like Roque.

“When they see Roque, they can relate,” Guevara says. “They will say if she can do it, I can do it. She not only sings, she ministers and reaches out to the people and the public, and she really has an impact on people. People get blessed.”
