April 15, 2011 - PRLog -- Chicago, Illinois – Compass to Care, The Mike & Sandy Ernsdorff Childhood Cancer Foundation, introduced today A Cup for a Child’s Cure community event to support children who must travel for cancer care. The inaugural gathering will be hosted by Starbucks at Comer Children’s Hospital at the University of Chicago on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 from 8:00am to 10:00am.

According to the National Cancer Institute, each year one to two out of every 10,000 children in the United States develop cancer. Seeking the best and most appropriate treatment for their children, families often make numerous trips to medical centers for treatment by pediatric oncology experts, like those at Comer Children’s Hospital. Compass to Care schedules and pays for medical-related travel arrangements when financially-challenged families need to travel greater than 60 miles to see such a specialist.

A Cup for a Child’s Cure is a way for members of the community to support the mission of Compass to Care by hosting their own fundraising coffee gathering with family, friends and colleagues.  With the support of Compass to Care, hosts invite their guests to enjoy coffee and pastries, to learn more about the service Compass to Care provides for children with cancer and to make a donation to support children in their community.

Compass to Care is launching this new initiative at the Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago, IL on Tuesday, April 19, 2011.  Visitors to the hospital between 8:00am to 10:00am will be offered coffee and pastries, generously donated by Starbucks, and will have an opportunity to learn more about Compass to Care and how they can host their own A Cup for a Child’s Cure.

“We are so honored to have the support of Starbucks to host our first A Cup for a Child’s Cure at Comer Children’s Hospital at the University of Chicago,” stated Michelle Ernsdorff, founder and CEO of Compass to Care. “Comer is at the forefront of care for children diagnosed with cancer. Families travel from all over to have their children treated at this renowned medical center. The travel costs can be overwhelming, particularly at a time when they are already facing extraordinary medical expenses.  Outreaches like A Cup for a Child’s Cure will help families seek a cure for their children by ensuring they have the necessary resources to travel to medical centers, including Comer,” Ernsdorff concluded.
