April 8, 2011 - PRLog -- As a community-wide finale to the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra’s 2010-2011 “Windows to the Soul” concert series, the non-profit organization has released a Call for Entries for an artistic competition. “There are so many talented artists in our region,” stated WSO’s Executive Director, Steve Collins, “we wanted to create a way for these individuals to bring the beautiful windows in churches throughout the Greater Waterbury region to the attention of the general public.”

The exhibit of artists’ entries will be displayed in The Atrium of the Naugatuck Valley Community College Fine Arts Center where the final WSO concert, “Windows to the Soul” featuring Ottorino Respighi’s “Church Windows” will be held Saturday, May 14 at 8:00 PM. “Most of our concerts each year are held at NVCC Fine Arts Center at 750 Chase Parkway in Waterbury and the natural-light-filled Atrium provides an exceptionally ideal setting to feature artistic works” commented Collins.

The Waterbury Symphony Orchestra’s final performance, “Windows to the Soul” on May 14 will also include Gabrieli’s “CanzonSeptimi” Toni No. 1; Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Minor featuring pianist AlessioBax; and Respighi’s Church Windows. The WSO website exclaims, “Rachmaninoff’s towering achievement, his monumental Third Piano Concerto is so rich in melody and sumptuous harmony that it practically made Hollywood blush in the 1940’s (even as they continued to pilfer this veritable tune factory for material). Gabrieli’s music will be performed much as it was 400 years ago – antiphonally surrounding the audience - and makes the perfect bookend with Respighi’s radiant and rarely performed Church Windows.”

“Our ambition with the artistic competition,” stated Kathryn Dennen, WSO Marketing Director, “is to bring the spectacular beauty of church windows throughout our area right into the NVCC hall. It will be a perfect complement to Respighi’s little-known Church Windows piece.” Dennen added that all entries must identify the Waterbury area church as well as street location, artist’s name and home town.

Artwork must be visual in nature, inspired by a particular Waterbury area church, of literal or abstract interpretation. Each artwork must indicate name of church, full address of the church, artists’ name and home town, No more than four (4) pieces of art/artist may be submitted. Maximum size of each submission is 4’ x 4’.

Submissions of artistic renderings of windows of churches in the Greater Waterbury area, along with each individual artist’s application form, must be submitted to the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra offices no later than 5:00 PM on Friday, April 29, 2011. Submissions can also be mailed to WSO, Attn: WTTS Exhibit, PO Box 1762, Waterbury, CT 06721. They can be brought to the WSO offices located at 110 Bank Street in Waterbury. No entries will be accepted after that time and date. There are no fees to enter this competition.

During intermission at the May 14 WSO concert, “Windows to the Soul”, at the NVCC Fine Arts Center at 8:00 PM, concert audience members will vote for their favorite artistic submission. The winning artist will be announced at the end of the concert and will receive a Gift Basket containing:
