April 6, 2011 - PRLog -- Recovery Ahead But Boom Years Over  We expect Saudi Arabia's banking sector to recover slowly and have made slight downward revisions to  our asset and loan growth forecasts accordingly. With the private sector remaining weak after 2009's  downturn and banks still cautious to expand new lending, we estimate that loan growth came in at only  3.0% in 2010. Loan growth will recover to average 8.5% over the 2011-2014 forecast period, remaining  far below pre-crisis levels and constraining growth in household consumption as a result.  After a slight recovery in loan growth in Saudi Arabia in H110, lending stagnated in July compared to the  same period in 2009, growing by only 0.27% year-on-year (y-o-y), bringing the average rate of loan  growth for the first seven months of 2010 to 2.0%. Similarly, asset growth in July was the lowest of this  decade at only 2.0%, with the year-to-date average coming in at 3.0%. Deposit growth has also been  rapidly decreasing, from 8.5% in January to 1.8% in July, averaging 3.9% in the first seven months of  2010. In contrast, capital grew steadily at a relatively constant rate of 8.0% y-o-y between March and  July, averaging 9.4% over January-July.    Given the poor performance of the Saudi banking sector in the first seven months of 2010, we revised  down our estimates for the year. We estimate that assets grew by 3.0%, driven primarily by the modest  3.0% increase in lending to the private sector (both revised down from 6.0%). Towards the end of 2010  we expected lending growth to pick up slightly, bolstered by the recovery in global commodity prices  (particularly oil) and base effects.
