March 31, 2011 - PRLog -- “Shape Shifters,”  the latest virtual exhibit at the Forward Thinking Museum, features portraits by Mariette Pathy Allen, who has dedicated much of her career as photographer, writer, and lecturer to changing the way gender non-conforming people see themselves and how they are seen by others. Unlike the common depictions of transgender people in unsavory environments, looking bizarre or encouraged to behave as exhibitionists for the camera, she portrays her subjects in the daylight, in everyday life, in relationships with wives, children and friends.

“By offering glimpses of actual lives, I challenge the assumption that exploring gender identity is the “problem” of a small minority”, says Allen. “Reframed, gender identity and expression may be seen as an area of exploration and discovery for all of us. We might even experience the feeling of liberation that can come from gender fluidity. Rather than interpreting change as confusion, we could see it as the catalyst for our ongoing search for the essence of a human being.”
