The 10:30 a.m. pre-Earth Day event will feature trained birds such as falcons and hawks demonstrating their impressive skills and an array of interesting facts that will help the audience get to know more about the birds and wildlife in the area. Diving falcons can reach speeds of up to 272 mph, according to master falconer Dale Arrowood, who leads the “Birds of Prey” show. In a show-and-tell of sorts, Arrowood will share facts about the falcon and other birds’ wing span, hunting style and other unique characteristics. Historic Banning Mills provides a safe-haven for birds that were once in danger of extinction. Since the land is a conservancy, the birds and other wildlife are protected by state and federal regulations. None of the wild birds are used in the show. Instead, each bird comes from a rescue or rehabilitation center and is carefully inspected before performing. “As the birds become more familiar with people, their true personalities begin to shine,” Arrowood said. “After the show, the audience seems to have a new understanding and true appreciation for them.” Fans can expect to see Eurasian Eagle owl, the biggest owl in the world, black vultures, and red tail, red shoulder hawks, among other birds. The “Birds of Prey Show” at Historic Banning Mills costs $5 per person and is open to the public. For information, visit http://www.historicbanningmills.com or call 1-866-447-8688.
