March 25, 2011 - PRLog -- Picking The Outperformers  The Chilean banking sector remains a regional favourite due to the robust growth rates of assets and  loans, and very little systemic risk. We highlight those banks best placed to expand over the coming years  as the ones with a presence across all regions and a diversity of income streams, namely Banco  Santander de Chile and Banco de Cr√©dito e Inversiones de Chile.  The Chilean banking sector is in very good health, and remains one of our favourite sectors both in Chile  and within the Latin America region. The industry has shown impressive resilience through the global  financial crisis and the devastating earthquake in February 2010, and although rates of growth of loans  and assets remain below pre-crisis highs, we believe the worst is firmly behind Chile's commercial  banking sector.    In addition, there is a very low level of systemic risk within the banking system due in large part to a  sound regulatory framework. As a result, the rate of non-performing loans (NPLs) remains low at 2.75%,  after rising slightly following the earthquake, and the aggregate loans-to-deposits ratio is stable at 119%.  While this means Chilean banks are highly leveraged compared to many of their regional counterparts,  this level has remained virtually unchanged for almost a decade, implying little risk from a deterioration  in credit quality.    Little Change In Industry Structure  The banking sector remains very diverse and competitive, with over twenty private banks in operation.  That said, there is still a clear dominance of the top five banks (excluding state owned Banco del Estado), which have all recovered robustly from the financial crisis and continue to control a large  majority (around 80%) of total industry assets. Banco Santander de Chile (Santander) is the largest  commercial bank in Chile in terms of assets, with CLP22175.9bn, or around 20% of total industry assets,  according to the most recent data.  Furthermore, the structure of incomes and profits within the industry has remained broadly unchanged  over recent years, with 66.7% of aggregate total income being derived from interest payments in  November 2010, compared with 63.1% in November 2009. Of total interest income, 61% was accounted  for by loans to corporates, a slight decrease from 63% in 2009. As such, despite the maturity and high  penetration levels of the Chilean banking industry, we reiterate our long-held view that there remains  significant scope for expansion through an increase in lending to consumers.
