KIALOA Announces 8th Annual Live Like You Paddle Student Scholarship

March 24, 2011 - PRLog -- KIALOA Paddles’ annual scholarship is an opportunity for student paddlers to earn a FREE KIALOA paddle.  To be considered for the scholarship, students (18 years old and under) must submit a creative project such as an essay, art, poem, or digital presentation which expresses how outrigger paddling has taught them Hawaiian values.  The top entries will receive a free KIALOA outrigger paddle.

Hawaiian Values
Outrigger paddling is more than a sport;  it is an integral part of the Hawaiian culture.   The Live Like You Paddle Student Scholarship celebrates and perpetuates the importance of Hawaiian values in outrigger canoeing.  Values like Po’okela (excellence), Laulima (teamwork), Malama (stewardship), Kuleana (responsibility), Kokua (helping), Ohana (family), or Ha’aha’a (humility) are part of learning how to paddle in a canoe… and live life.

Past Winners
Ten- year-old Noa, a winner in 2010, produced a very unique art/poetry combination by drawing an outrigger canoe using words.  Seventeen- year-old Mitchell, another 2010 winner, submitted a polished music video of himself paddling with his outrigger team.   Iris, a winner in 2009, created a beautiful story scrapbook of her paddling ohana.  

Although these projects were very different, what they had in common was that they creatively expressed how paddling has helped teach them Hawaiian values.
