New Market Research Report: Hungary Commercial Banking Report Q2 2011

March 20, 2011 - PRLog -- Poor Lending Outlook  Credit expansion and asset growth in the Hungarian banking sector will prove lacklustre in 2011, in line  with the weak recovery expected in the real economy. Despite lower income taxes and improving  employment prospects, the ongoing weakness of the forint will see to it that the household sector's large  stock of foreign currency loans precludes a strong rebound in consumer lending. At the same time, rising  provisions for bad loans and the impact of new taxes on the banking sector will mean profitability  remains scarce for banks over the medium term.  Hungarian banks are in for another tough year in 2011. Aside from a levy on banks' balance sheets  (which has the potential to remain in place through to the end of 2013) banks remain under pressure from  deteriorating asset quality, which continues to result in higher loan loss provisioning and reduced  profitability. Given the already weak outlook for the recovery in the real economy, we see limited scope  for major expansion of the banking sector, with asset growth set to reach only 7.0% by the year-end,  rising to 8.0% in 2012, well below the double-digit levels of growth witnessed prior to Hungary's  economic downturn (see chart below).  Demand and Supply Of Credit Looking Weak  Our pessimistic outlook for total asset growth is driven by weak lending conditions in the real economy.  According to the most recent data released by the National Bank of Hungary (MNB), total lending was  only up 3.2% y-o-y in November 2010, only marginally up on the 3.1% growth recorded in January 2010.  Our medium-term forecast is for only a mild pick-up in lending growth, reaching 6.0% by end-2011 and  8.0% by end-2012. This is a result of both demand and supply dynamics.
