New Market Study Published: Bangladesh Telecommunications Report Q2 2011

New Fixed Networks research report from Business Monitor International is now available from Fast Market Research

March 19, 2011 - PRLog -- BMI incorporated the latest figures released by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission and mobile operators in our latest quarterly report for Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi mobile industry continued its impressive growth momentum by adding 5.636mn in the quarter ended September 2010, to bring the country's total subscriber base to 69.057mn. We expect the growth rates - mainly driven by prepaid subscribers - to carry on into the years ahead, which are reflected in our mobile subscriber forecasts. However, this emphasis on low-value prepaid subscribers will continue to have a negative impact on operators' ARPU rates, which we expect to decrease over the next five years.

That said, 3G services could be launched in Bangladesh's telecoms sector in the short term. State-owned operator Teletalk was selected by the government to lead the 3G sector. However, BMI is concerned that larger operators such as Grameenphone and Banglalink could be sidelined in order to give the stateowned entity first-mover advantage in the new lucrative business. As a result, our ARPU forecasts did not reflect the potential positive impact of 3G services on operators' profitability in the next five years. However, we will revisit our forecasts once the telecoms regulator announces a date for a 3G auction.

Considering the low ARPU rates in the Bangladeshi market - the average blended ARPU of Grameenphone and Banglalink was US$2.8 in September 2010 - operators continued to increase their value-added portfolio in order to offset declining voice revenues. Pacific Bangladesh Telecom (Citycell) announced a partnership with Dutch-Bangla Bank (DBBL) for electronic commerce and mobile banking in November 2010. The main beneficiary, according to this agreement, will be rural consumers who will access DBBL's financial services through Citycell's mobile network. This is part of the industry's effort to promote growth of telecoms services in the underserved rural regions in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh rose to 13th place in BMI's latest business environment ratings for the Asia-Pacific after the country Industry and Country Rewards scores improved, as well as its Country Risk score. However, we note the country could see its overall rating decline in the next quarter. The crash in Bangladesh's DSE General Index (DGEN) is showing no signs of stopping and looks set for further downside as the market struggles to find any meaningful level of support. The country is also facing threats to its short-term and long-term stability, as rivalry between the two main political parties intensifies and the government moves to ban religion-based politics.
