Three quarters of Britons do not want the Euro

A new study by the UK’s leading discount website has found that more than three quarters of Britons do not want the Pound Sterling to ever be replaced by the Euro; with the majority claiming that the pound is part of British heritage.

March 17, 2011 - PRLog -- Latest research from the UK’s leading discount website has revealed that 76% of Britons never want the Pound Sterling currency to be replaced by the Euro, which has already replaced the currency in the majority of EU countries.

www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk conducted the study as part of ongoing research into the attitudes of Britons towards our currency and how they would feel about it changing. 1,661 members of the British public, each aged 18 and over, subsequently took part in the poll and answered questions surrounding Pound Sterling and the Euro.

When asked, ‘How would you feel about the Euro replacing Pound Sterling in Britain?’ 76% said they would ‘never’ want it to happen. 11% ‘liked’ the idea of having the Euro in Britain, whilst the remaining 13% claimed to be ‘indifferent.’

The respondents who were against the idea were asked to explain further why this was the case. More than half, 52%, liked the fact that the Pound Sterling was part of British heritage, whilst 14% admitted they ‘just couldn’t be bothered to learn a new currency.’ A quarter, 24%, said they ‘weren’t sure’ why they wouldn’t want the Euro to become the British currency.

When asked how they felt about other EU countries having replaced their currency with the Euro, 46% of respondents thought it was ‘a shame.’ Despite this, one in ten, 11%, like using the Euro on holiday in Europe. When asked, ‘Would you like to see more notes or coins introduced in the Pound Sterling currency?’ 55% of people said ‘yes.’

The top five notes and coins Britons would like to see introduced into the British Pound Sterling currency, according to the poll, are:

1.   £0.99p coins
2.   £1 notes
3.   £0.75p coins
4.   £15 notes
5.   £100 notes

Mark Pearson, chairman of http://www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, commented on the findings:

“Many Britons would see it as an awful shame if we were to lose the Pound Sterling currency to the Euro, as proved by the poll; but the change may be on the cards in years to come. More EU countries use the Euro than those who do not, so I think we will start to see more and more introduce the currency over the coming years.

“It would be a massive change, but one that many think is inevitable. As for people wanting more coins and notes added to the British Pound Sterling currency, some suggestions really would be a good idea. I particularly like the idea of a £100 note and think a £0.99p coin would be very useful. It would certainly reduce the number of coppers in peoples’ wallets and purses!”
