By: Katie Mahoney March is home to many of my favorite holidays - of course, St. Patrick’s Day but also the EPA’s Fix a Leak Week lands in March too. So this month, I’d like to focus on ways you can manage your pot of gold when it comes to plumbing & HVAC without being, as my dad would say, “penny wise, pound foolish”. Read on to find ways you can save money without negatively impacting your health, comfort or lifestyle. Find out why we recommend you annually test your battery backup system to make sure it’s operating in the right parameters, yet we don’t see that much value in cleaning your water heater. Also learn how saving water by fixing leaks or installing new water saving fixtures can save you (and the earth). With that here is our advice for managing your pot of gold…. Till next time, Sláinte! Dan Mahoney Maintenance Reminder: Battery Backup System Check Homeowners install battery backup systems to safeguard their basements from taking on water. These systems aren’t “set-it-and- Annually checking these components helps identify the system's reliability & catches problems before you have to deal with the cleanup from a flood. This annual maintenance isn’t something to skimp on. Good news is, you can save your money on preventative cleaning of your water heater. In our experience, unless you’ve been militant & done this annually without fail, the cleaning can cause more harm than good. Quick Fix Tip-o-the-Month: The EPA annually takes time to remind Americans to check their homes for leaks. With the numbers they have compiled showing wasted water, it’s no wonder why! “The amount of water leaked from U.S. homes could exceed more than 1trillion gallons per year. That’s equivalent to annual water use of Los Angeles, Chicago & Miami combined” (www.epa.gov/ Make sure you aren’t contributing to the problem with this quick test. Plan a time when you will not use water for two hours. Visit your water meter & take note of where it is when no water is being used in the house. Two hours later, head back to the meter & confirm that the number hasn’t moved. If it has, you probably have a leak. Leaks do nothing but literally throw your money down the drain. But when your furnace is not working properly, should you repair or replace your heating system? Before you decide, ask the following questions: 1. Will the repair extend the life of the system? If the system won’t last another year, repair is probably not a good investment. 2. Will the repair help my system operate more efficiently? 3. How much will the repair cost? Don’t postpone a replacement just to avoid costs - you’ll pay for the repair and may need a new system soon anyway. Additionally, parts for older systems may be difficult to obtain. 4. What are signs that my system needs to be replaced? If the system pre-dates 1995, requires frequent repairs, or if any system components are cracked, leaking or not functioning properly, replacement may be your only option.
