Follow on Google News | Pharmacy OneSource Announces Webinars on Bugs and DrugsExamining Detection of Microorganisms and Implementation of Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs
By: Pharmacy OneSource Public Relations Infection Preventionist Eileen O'Rourke will describe basic morphology of microorganisms. She will discuss the value of gram stain in directing treatment and examine different types of media. O’Rourke will review methods of detection and sensitivity testing of organisms and discuss automated detection methods and importance of proper specimen collection. She will also present infectious disease case studies and examine them in terms of patient arrivals, cultures taken, results and interpretation. Amanda C. Hansen, PharmD, will examine implementing an antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP). ASP development is challenging but the benefits are tangible as evident in literature which describes decreases in healthcare associated infection rates including a reduction in Clostridium difficile infections and decreased bacterial resistance. Further, quality-improvement and safety data demonstrate better outcomes associated with the timely and appropriate use of empiric antimicrobials as a result of ASP practices.
