The Lupus Magazine - Beating the Butterfly - an inspiring lupus awareness project from the UK

In the march edition of The Lupus Magazine, Geoff Thomas talks to the amazing young ladies behind a remarkable lupus project, and discovers how a lupus awareness wristband lead to an inspiring project by three young English digital media students

Feb. 28, 2011 - PRLog -- It’s only taken a matter of a few months, but the legacy of a digital media lupus awareness project by three wonderful girls is sure to benefit not only those in the UK, but so many others worldwide.

When Sophie, Kirsty and Katrina, from The University College Falmouth, Cornwall, were assigned a ‘community project’ related to their studies, Beat the Butterfly was born. And as a consequence, the early results have been overwhelming, not only to the girls, but to the online lupus community around the globe who have embraced their efforts to raise funds and awareness for The St. Thomas’ Lupus Trust in London, and lupus in general.

Sophie, a carer for her mother who has lupus, along with Kirsty and Katrina, have established a refreshing website, produced an amazing awareness video and continue to raise funds for St. Thomas’ Lupus Trust, a charity that raises funds to support the vital and pioneering work of the Lupus Research Team at St Thomas’ Hospital in London. The Trust’s Campaign Director, Angie Davidson, embraced Beat the Butterfly and is inspired by the effort the girls have made over recent weeks and the progress they’ve made.

"When Sophie, Kirsty & Katrina first contacted me I was excited that they had chosen to highlight lupus which never gets the profile it deserves in the UK. At that point I had no idea just how the whole project would take off.

I've been delightfully surprised by the enthusiasm with which the girls tackled this and the way they got all the University students involved. This has help to raise lupus awareness amongst a group of young people that we would normally hope to target.

I was very impressed by how professional the website and merchandise is, the video they have produced is also quite amazing, you'd never know that it was made by students and not a media company.

I'm really grateful to them all for doing this for us and for all lupus patients in the World. If we had more campaigns of this high calibre highlighting lupus we'd be well on our way to everyone knowing what lupus is. We've been thrilled to be associated with Sophie, Kirsty & Katrina and the fantastic Beat the Butterfly Campaign"
