"About 85 percent of the buying and maintenance decisions about the household car are made by women", according to the Car Care Council. So in theory, the days of being treated like a "little lady" when you walk in for the 30,000 mile tune-up are over.
"Any place that talks down to you or doesn't treat you fairly, they don't deserve your money," said Fix, author of Lauren Fix's Guide to Loving Your Car.
"Few people really know their way around today's cars — male or female", said Ron Minton of AAA Texas.
Sure, it's probably nice to know how to change the oil in a pinch. But popping the hood won't do much good for the average JOE.   Many late models are operated with the help of computers.
These automobiles require specialized equipment to diagnose and correct problems.
We are getting away from that do-it-yourself approach, therse cars are becoming so complicated.
That doesn't mean that there aren't basics every car owner should know.
The Number one rule is always read the owner's manual. That's the booklet in your glove compartment underneath the papers and old bills and kids wrapers..
Fidelity Automotive Solutions wants to tell you one important message about auto maintence.
Change the oil!
If you don't, your car is going to fall apart. Then you will be spending more money down the road.
Indeed, regular basic maintenance is all about tuning up the parts so the whole will last longer. That's important because most people are holding on to their cars longer than before, about 10 to 12 years, up from seven or eight.
Car Maintence is usually for real experts, but it's easy enough to regularly check the tire pressure and replace windshield wipers.  Another key is helping the mechanic diagnose the problem.
Though women may have automotive purchasing power these days, car care still has the reputation of being a man's world.
As Amber Harrelson, a service writer with Milstead Automotive sees it, women can be more hesitant when they describe their car trouble than men. That's not necessary, she said.
"Men may not know how to change their oil, but if there is something wrong with their car, they are more confident about describing it," said Harrelson, whose job requires that she work with customers and mechanics to get the car fixed.
For most people, keeping their cars in good running order is about finding the right mechanic.
Check to make sure the shop is clean and tidy. The mechanics should be certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. AAA Texas also approves shops after a vigorous evaluation, said Minton, who is a master technician.
And in an age when women are controlling the car finances, it also pays to read the writing on a shop's walls.
"If they have girly calendars up," Minton said, "you are in the wrong place."
