Cybercriminals intrude into computer systems and networks to extract confidential information related to individuals, organizations and government bodies. The information may be misused for perpetrating various types of fraudulent activities such as identity theft, misrepresentation and stealing funds. Breach of privileged information related to government bodies, business undertakings, intelligence agencies and scientific institutions may pose threat to national security. Cybercrime has long term implications on the affected individuals. Security awareness training is crucial for preventing employees and individuals from falling prey to sophisticated crime mechanisms of offenders. Countries across the world are now realizing the adverse implications of cybercrime. In the recent times, Indian government has witnessed frequent attacks on computer systems and websites. While India has made rapid strides in the field of IT during the recent years, the country needs to groom more number of security specialists to meet future requirements. The Director of IIIT-A, Mr. M.D. Tiwari states that as per a Ministry of Human Resource Department estimate, India requires 2.5 lakh cyber specialists to deal with the menace of cybercrime. The proposed Institute would help the country in bringing out trained IT professionals. IIIT-A has been chosen for designing the concept and finalizing the details for the proposed IIIT as the former has expertise on cyber law and also offers a post graduate program on cyber law. IIIT-A has an INR7 crore IT forensic lab. The growing dependency on Internet makes it necessary for governments to invest in cyber education through inclusion of IT security introduction in curriculum at an early level. Organizations must incorporate elearning programs to enable employees upgrade their technical know-how and contribute in improving the IT security environment.
